London’s first theatre was built in Shoreditch (East London) more than 400 years ago in the 1570s - now there are hundreds! The London stage, one of the most respected worldwide, attracts some of the globe’s finest thespians as well as Hollywood and musical greats: Kevin Spacey, Nicole Kidman and Kathleen Turner in recent years!
The London theatre scene can roughly be divided into three categories: West End, high art/cutting edge and alternative/fringe. The latter genre is normally low-key, often in rooms above pubs, and under-funded but, at times, can be the most groundbreaking, contemporary and mesmerizing.
The West End is London’s answer to Broadway, where you will find brand new musicals such as Spamalot, Wicked and The Sound of Music as well as timeless classics such as The Lion King, MAMMA MIA! and Chicago.
The Society of London Theatre (SOLT) can offer you some great advice when booking tickets for your clients.
There are many ticket agents selling London theatre tickets, ranging from well-known international organisations to tiny independent companies. The great majority of ticket agents are legitimate, honest operations. A small minority, however, are less reputable. Most legitimate agents are members of STAR (The Society of Ticket Agents & Retailers), an organisation that aims to encourage best practice among ticketing outlets. It’s a good idea to enquire about STAR membership when considering buying from a ticket agent. For more information about STAR members or their code of practice, call the STAR Helpline on 0870 603 9011 or visit
